The Next Bitcoin Is Bitcoin (With One Big Upgrade)

People have searched for "the next Bitcoin" for over ten years. Most answers point to a brand new coin with a new team and a big promise. Most of those coins faded away.

eCash (ECX) is a different kind of answer. It is not a rival to Bitcoin. It is Bitcoin with only a few minor changes, plus one big upgrade called drivechains.

That makes eCash the strongest case yet for the next Bitcoin. Here is why.

eCash (ECX) quick facts

  • What it is: A hard fork of Bitcoin

  • Created by: Paul Sztorc and LayerTwo Labs

  • Who gets it: Bitcoin holders who control their own keys get 1 ECX for every 1 BTC at the snapshot

  • The big upgrade: Drivechains (BIP 300 and BIP 301)

  • Drivechains at launch: Thunder and zSide

  • Coming next: BitNames, BitAssets, Truthcoin, Photon, and CoinShift

  • Mainnet: Targeted for October 31, 2026, around Bitcoin block 973,728

What Is the Next Bitcoin?

The next Bitcoin has to pass three tests:

  • Keep what works. Proof of work mining, a supply nobody can inflate on a whim, and no company in charge.

  • Add what is missing. Privacy, cheap payments, tokens, and new kinds of apps.

  • Stay one money. No splitting users across a thousand different coins.

Most altcoins fail at least one test. Some drop Bitcoin's rules. Others add a feature but launch yet another coin that has to start from zero.

eCash is built to pass all three.

Is eCash the Next Bitcoin?

eCash starts as Bitcoin. It runs on a copy of Bitcoin Core, uses the same SHA-256d mining, and uses the same addresses and keys.

At the snapshot, Bitcoin's full history is copied over. If your BTC sits in a wallet where you hold the keys, your ECX will be waiting for you.

Then eCash adds drivechains. A drivechain is a sidechain that uses ECX as its money. You move ECX onto it, use its features, and move it back when you are done.

The main chain stays simple and steady. New ideas live on sidechains. If one sidechain fails, the main chain keeps running.

The few minor changes

Besides drivechains, eCash makes a handful of small changes to Bitcoin's code. Mining difficulty resets at launch so the new network can get started. There is also an optional setting that keeps an eCash transaction from being copied onto Bitcoin.

The fork also reassigns some old, unmoved coins from Bitcoin's earliest days, often called the Patoshi coins. This is part of how eCash is funded.

Bitcoin, Your Way: One Chain for Every Idea

Bitcoin today is a single dish. Everyone gets the same rules. Changing those rules takes years of arguing, and most ideas never make it.

eCash works more like a buffet or an app store. The main chain is your plate. Each drivechain is a dish you can add if you want it. Nobody forces anything on you.

Each drivechain answers one question: what would Bitcoin look like with this feature?

Ready at launch: Thunder and zSide

Big Block Bitcoin (Thunder). This is Bitcoin with room for everyone. Thunder is a big block chain built for fast, cheap payments at global scale. Learn more about Thunder.

Private Bitcoin (zSide). This is Bitcoin with strong privacy. zSide uses Zcash-style zero-knowledge proofs, so transactions look the same from the outside.

Coming next

These drivechains have been announced and are on the way. They show where eCash is headed.

Memecoin Bitcoin (BitAssets). This is Bitcoin where anyone can launch a token. BitAssets is built for memecoins, stablecoins, and any other token idea. Memecoin communities are already planning launches.

Prediction Market Bitcoin (Truthcoin). This is Bitcoin where you can bet on real-world outcomes. Truthcoin is built for markets on elections, sports, and events, with results settled by its users.

Quantum Resistant Bitcoin (Photon). This is Bitcoin ready for quantum computers. Photon uses signatures designed to stay safe even if quantum computers break today's cryptography.

Name System Bitcoin (BitNames). This is Bitcoin where you can own a name. BitNames lets people register and control names and digital identities.

Trading Bitcoin (CoinShift). This is Bitcoin with a built-in swap desk. CoinShift is built for trading between eCash and other coins without a middleman.

The drivechain system has room for up to 256 sidechains. Explore all eCash drivechains.

Many Rule Sets, One Coin

The main eCash chain is basically Bitcoin. It will have its own users, its own exchanges, and its own network effect.

Now add zSide, the privacy drivechain. It brings a new use case, new users, new developers, and maybe new exchanges. That is a second network effect.

In the old crypto world, this would be BTC and a privacy coin like XMR. That means two coins and two communities, all fighting over the same buyers. When one wins, the other usually loses.

BTC and XMR competing as separate coins, compared with eCash drivechains Thunder and zSide adding demand to one ECX coin.

On eCash, both networks run on the same coin. Every privacy user needs ECX. Every exchange that supports the privacy chain supports ECX.

So the two networks compound instead of compete. If the privacy chain gets huge, it becomes the tide that lifts every other ship in the eCash world.

Now add big blocks, memecoins, prediction markets, and quantum resistance. Each new chain brings its own crowd, and every crowd adds to the same coin.

Miners win too. Under BIP 301, miners can earn fees from sidechains without running sidechain software. More sidechain activity means more pay for the miners who protect ECX.

Why Not Wait for Bitcoin to Add Drivechains?

Drivechains were proposed for Bitcoin years ago as BIP 300 and BIP 301. They never won enough support to activate. Bitcoin changes slowly on purpose, and that is part of its strength.

eCash lets the drivechain idea go live without asking Bitcoin to change. Your BTC stays exactly as it is. If you hold BTC with your own keys at the snapshot, you keep your BTC and get ECX too.

How to Get eCash (ECX) Before Mainnet

The simplest way to get ECX is to hold BTC in a wallet where you control the private keys. That means a hardware wallet, or a software wallet that gave you a seed phrase. If an exchange holds your coins, the exchange holds the keys.

Coins held on an exchange depend on that exchange's policy. Some may pass ECX on to users, and some may not.

The mainnet snapshot is targeted for October 31, 2026, the 18th birthday of the Bitcoin whitepaper. There is no claim form. Anyone who asks for your seed phrase to "claim" ECX is trying to rob you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the next Bitcoin?

Many people see eCash (ECX) as the next Bitcoin. It is Bitcoin with a few minor changes, plus drivechains. Drivechains add optional features like privacy and big blocks while everything runs on one shared coin.

Is eCash the next Bitcoin?

eCash (ECX) is a Bitcoin hard fork created by Paul Sztorc and LayerTwo Labs. It keeps Bitcoin's code and history and adds drivechains. That lets it grow new features without splitting into new coins.

Why is eCash different from other altcoins?

Most altcoins add one feature and launch a new coin to go with it. eCash adds features as drivechains that all use ECX, so every new chain adds demand for the same coin.

Do I have to sell Bitcoin to get eCash?

No. If you control your BTC private keys at the snapshot, you get 1 ECX for each BTC. Your BTC stays untouched.

Which drivechains will be live at launch?

Thunder (big blocks) and zSide (privacy) are planned for launch. BitNames, BitAssets, Truthcoin, Photon, and CoinShift are announced for later. The system has room for up to 256 drivechains.

When does eCash mainnet launch?

eCash mainnet is targeted for October 31, 2026, around Bitcoin block 973,728.
